    Yes, the basis of practice. All four are needed for a balanced approach to meditation, or contemplation, or for keeping in mind when reading Buddhist literature. I was always grateful for finding metta and mindfulness of breathing (basically upekkha) meditations as a basis for moving on from where I was before becoming a Budddhist. Compassion (karuna) and Sympathetic Joy (mudita) can be developed from these two and make great measures of your own progress. They aren't easy to develop, but lack is obvious when we honestly analyse how we react to what happens to us and around us.
