Kia ora from Aotearoa
Kia ora
I live in Aotearoa New Zealand.
I have been a Buddhist practitioner of one type of another for many years - I could be described as a fickle Buddhist – I studied comparative religion at university many years ago (the 1970s), I have been a member of small meditation groups, been part of a Zen group and attended a Zen retreat, done a basic correspondence course with The Buddhist Society, London, associated with a Theravada Monastery - taking part in both in person and remote services, done part of the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage, recently took part in an online course on Aging as a Spiritual Practice with Lewis Richmond, and have gone periods without practicing at all.
One thing I haven’t taken a break from once I started, is my study of the Shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute; I am now at Jun Shihan level and play Shakuhachi as a form of practice.
Up to the end of 2019 I was a librarian, but had to retire at the end of that year for health reasons. My condition means I have to spend a lot of time at home.
I am working on an MA on Kantian ethics, and I hope to start working towards a PhD next year.
I continue to review books, as I did as a librarian, and have a blog of New Zealand fiction. I do some writing to help raise money for a chimpanzee sanctuary in Uganda where I volunteered a few years ago.
My practice at the moment is daily Shakuhachi and meditation sessions. I look forward to contributing to some of the discussions on this discussion group.
