    Reading the Shobogenzo

Moderator's note: Hi Thinker, I started this new thread to share the readings of the Shobogenzo

Hi Esho, have just downloaded Dogens Shobogenzo and look forward to reading!

Hi Thinker! That's great. I have a complete Shobogenzo... the one of the 92 chapters; I downloaded it from Internet chapter by chapter some time ago; it is a difficult text; it is told that you have to have a long practice of Zazen in order to understand it. However Zen master Jundo Cohen wrote a book where he assures he makes it easy to understand... I don't know, I haven't read the book because I prefer to develop my own understanding through the practice of Zazen. Also here is a talk of that same book if you wish to listen to it. I haven't listened to it... I'm really not interested in his book; as I said... prefer to develop and evolve my understanding of the Shobognezo with the continued practice of Zazen.

Here's volume one of an English translation from the Japanese, its by Brad Warner's and Jundo Cohen's late Japanese teacher: Gudo Wafu Nishijima:

This translations are really smooth... I'm right now through the first chapter -Bendowa- and its resulting enjoyment.

I'm through chapter 2... Bendowa was great, its one of my favourites one because it's about Zazen; questioning and answering with a skeptical person about it. In that dialogue Dogen shows the virtues of Zazen in plain english.
