    Chan master Sheng Yen

Chan master Sheng Yen talks for approxomately 8 minutes about living in the present.

Living in the present moment doesn't mean that we should not reflect on things past, nor does it ask us not to plan for the future, or not to look ahead. Instead, it means that whatever we have to do right now, we do; whatever we are doing now, we focus all our attention on that task. This is the best way to live, to live a solidly grounded life. Every step we make is firm and steady

It's a subtle concept and one well worth studying. Most of us seem to live most of the time on autopilot, not truly concentrating on what we are doing at any given moment. But living in each moment isn't an easy practice and, as the clip shows, is open to misunderstanding. Being mindful of what we are doing at all times is another way 'in' to this.

    Hello Philg and Aloka,

Philg: I could not agree with you more that this is a simple concept that is difficult to put into practice. I am reading Gil Fronsdal's "The Issue at Hand" at the moment. The practice of being aware, moment to moment, sounds a lot like the concept of awareness training that Fronsdal explains when he states, "[w]ith an effort that is neither tense nor complacent, we cultivate clarity and stability of awareness so that we can see deeply into life" (The Issue at Hand, The Eightfold Path., Fronsdal, 2001., pg. 127).

    Thanks for sharing Aloka.

    Kind Regards
    Gene
