"Abstain from all sinful, unwholesome actions,
    perform only pious wholesome ones,
purify the mind; this is the teaching of enlightened ones"

So to attain enlightenment it is important to understand sila, samadhi and panna.

Sila (morality) and samadhi (concentration) are relatively easy to explain. They have a universal relevance and immediate experience. Panna (wisdom) may be more difficult to explain. It is very much an experiential wisdom gained through practicing the vipassana as explained in the maha satipatthana sutta. A Buddha explains it best but a right understanding is gained through walking the path.

I would explain Buddhism as a way/path that when followed changes your perspective, improving your life experiences.
