I need explanations about a short story...

While learning, my mind stopped on a short story that I couldn't find the true meaning. Here is the story:

" Once, there was a man who was burning incense.
He noticed that the fragrance was neither coming nor going;
it neither appeared nor disappeared.
This led him to gain Enlightenment. "

Can someone help me understanding this?

Hi Gan,

I Googled "Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai" and that's not the name of the author. It appears to be the name of a Japanese "Society for the Promotion of Buddhism". I've never heard of it and therefore don't know anything about it, sorry.

The verse you quoted certainly wasn't spoken in the early teachings of the historical Buddha (who lived around 2,500 years ago) and recorded in the Pali Canon suttas, which is our focus in this particular "Discovering Buddha's Teachings" forum on the BWB website.

I think you mentioned that your prefered Buddhist tradition is Theravada, by the way. It therefore might be a good idea to have a look at this pinned resource "An Outline of Buddhism" at the beginning of the topic list :

.As you are a beginner, to get some basics, you might be better off reading this second edition of the old favourite "What the Buddha Taught" by Walpola Rahula.
