    Being unaware of these three fires,
    Humankind delights in personal existence.

    Unfree from the bonds of Māra
    They swell the ranks of hell,
    Existence in the animal realm,
    Asura-demons and the sphere of ghosts.

    From the questions of King Milinda:

    ‘Venerable Nāgasena, those who regulate their lives aright—do they all attain to insight into the Truth, or are there some of them who do not?’

    ‘Some do, O king, and some do not.’

    ‘Then which do, Sir, and which do not?’

    ‘He who is born as an animal, O king, even though he regulate his life aright, will not attain to insight into the Truth, nor he who is born in The Preta world, nor he who holds wrong views, nor the deceitful man, nor he who has slain his mother, or his father, or an Arahat, nor he who has raised up a schism in the Order, nor he who has shed a Buddha’s blood, nor he who has furtively attached himself to the Order, nor he who has become a pervert, nor he who has violated a sister of the Order, nor he who, having been guilty of one or other of the thirteen grievous offences, has not been rehabilitated, nor a eunuch, nor an hermaphrodite—and whosoever is a human child under seven years of age, even though he regulate his life aright, will not attain to insight into the Truth. To these sixteen individuals there is no attainment of insight, O king, even though they regulate their life aright.

    “The fire of greed burns a mortal,
    “Rāgaggi dahati macce,

    lustful, infatuated by sensual pleasures;
    ratte kāmesu mucchite;

    while, fallen in the fire of hate,
    Dosaggi pana byāpanne,

    a person kills living creatures;
    nare pāṇātipātino.

    and, bewildered by the fire of delusion,
    Mohaggi pana sammūḷhe,

    they miss the teaching of the noble ones.
    ariyadhamme akovide;

    Not recognizing these three fires,
    Ete aggī ajānantā,

    people are caught up in identity.
    sakkāyābhiratā pajā.

    They fill the ranks of hell,
    Te vaḍḍhayanti nirayaṁ,

    of birth as an animal,
    tiracchānañca yoniyo;

    or of demons and ghosts,
    Asuraṁ pettivisayaṁ,

    not freed from Māra’s bonds.
    amuttā mārabandhanā.

    The fire of greed burns a mortal (macca; a man),
    lustful, infatuated by sensual pleasures;
    while, fallen in the fire of hate,
    a person kills living creatures;

    and, bewildered by the fire of delusion,
    they miss the teaching of the noble ones.
    Not recognizing these three fires,
    people are caught up in identity.

    They fill the ranks of hell,
    of birth as an animal,
    or of demons and ghosts,
    not freed from Māra’s bonds.

    But as to those committed day and night
    to the teaching of the Buddha:
    they quench the fire of greed,
    always perceiving ugliness;

    while those supreme persons
    quench the fire of hate with love;
    and the fire of delusion with the wisdom
    that leads to penetration.

    Having quenched these fires, alert,
    tireless all day and night,
    they become completely quenched,
    completely transcending suffering.

    Epic oral poetry, Element. Takes you on a journey and brings you back to the important points, a different person for having listened to it. Many thanks.
