    Study Guidance

    I listen to podcasts and read a lot of buddhist books by western authors, some of whom do not give sutta references when referring to extracts from the sutta's, or giving story analogies, as there are a lot of quite knowledgeable scholars who follow this forum, I wondered how they search for sutta content on sites such as Access to Insight where there are comprehensive collections of sutta's

    An example of my problem is the story of a princess who was pricked by a thorn whilst walking and wanted the whole kingdom covered in carpet as a result and was counselled by a wise man to wear shoes instead, (rough synopsis of the story), now I believe this is probably a sutta, but how can I find out

    Hi Mike,

    I'm not a scholar myself but I also use the newer site called Sutta Central as well as Access to Insight.

    http://suttacentral.net/

    http://www.accesstoinsight.org/

    At access to Insight, (where I think there are study guides referenced on the main page), I usually put key words into the main search box for the site -and then click on 'suttas' under where it say 'results' - then check whatever comes up.

    I doubt that a story about a princess a carpet and a wise man would be in a Pali Canon sutta.

    It sounds as though the story could have been adapted from verses from "A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" written by Shantideva in the 8th Century. He is often refered to in Tibetan Buddhism.

    Shantideva talks about wearing leather shoes instead of trying to cover the world in leather (rather than carpet)

    Where would I possibly find enough leather
    With which to cover the surface of the earth?
    But (wearing) leather just on the soles of my shoes
    Is equivalent to covering the earth with it.

    Likewise it is not possible for me
    To restrain the external course of things;
    But should I restrain this mind of mine
    What would be the need to restrain all else?
