There is the saying, "Don't take yourself so seriously." I am not fond of it, as it is often said to justify neglect or abuse. However, I do find there is something useful to it.
I think part of the reason why life is often so hard is because one is trying to live up to some particular kind of identity or role, as if that identity or role would be an absolute given, or as if it would be an absolute given that said identity or role must be lived up to at all costs. That identity or role or considering them an absolute given can be an example of taking oneself so seriously, too seriously.
I wonder what life would be like with a more fluid sense of self.
