The Grand National is being held this weekend which is the biggest horse racing event of the year in the UK.
There are issue with this event that concern me, firstly almost every year a horse is so badly injured it ends up being put to sleep and secondly the amount of money being wasted on gambling in a time of recession is disgusting.

What are your views on the biggest event in the British horse racing calendar, also is there's a sutra where Buddha teaches about gambling?

Hi Gary,

My thoughts have always been about the suffering of the horses falling and often being badly or fatally injured after being made to jump hedges which are far, far too high.

People are putting money before animal welfare. The horses don't have any choice, the jockeys, rich owners, gambling outlets and the gamblers who put their money into these events, do.

is there's a sutra where Buddha teaches about gambling?

Buddha mentions gambling in DN31 Siglovada Sutta

7. "And what six ways of squandering wealth are to be avoided?

Young man, heedlessness caused by intoxication, roaming the streets at inappropriate times, habitual partying, compulsive gambling, bad companionship, and laziness are the six ways of squandering wealth."

I personnally think its barbaric ...a few facts 12000 foals a year born into the racing circuit ....400 horses a year raced to death on circuits .... Many horse shot or sold to europe as surplus to requirements .Accepted figures show 70% of race horses suffer regular bleeding to the lungs ......all so people can make a few quid for watching animals suffer .......
