I recommend that others listen to this too. Very worthwhile. I absolutely agree with what he had to say about superstition.

"Superstition is to depend on others....to rely on things outside of oneself."

"Buddhism is the approach of wisdom....for Buddhists to seek help from spirits, devas etc outside of oneself is superstition...the aim of Buddhism is to destroy superstition."

Very interesting what he had to say about the meaning of 'Buddha' at the end too.

Perhaps others might have some comments.

The explanation of "Buddha" as the patterns and processes of the natural world clearly reflects the Dharma and is consistent with the teachings.

It reminds me of something that Gregory Bateson said: "The major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think."

(Picky, picky...but it would have been even clearer to have identified the "historical" Buddha as the mythic conceptual device that "he" is).

    Yes.

There is the audio talk (published) called ABC's of Buddhism, which Buddhadasa himself spoke in English. But it cannot be found on the net.

If you want some atmosphere, try the following You Tube from 4:45

Listen closely when Buddhadasa states: "Mai chai philosophy".

At 2:45 there is lovely Bodhisatva image.

Interesting take and that this should be considered a criticism, given Buddhism's central insight that we entirely depend on others and that everything arises dependently on things other than themselves.
